About West Tilbury
A village that is located on a river terrace on the northern side of the River Thames. It is a former Church of England parish and is also one of the seven conservation areas in Thurrock.
One of the biggest attractions of West Tilbury is the West Tilbury Village Hall that was opened in 1924 by Captain E.A. Loftus in remembrance of the local men that lost their lives during World War I. Inside the village hall as well as inside the St James Church, is a memorial tablet that contains all their names.
The Village Hall is on the north-western edge of the town in Rectory Road. It was built with funds that were raised by locals and is available for hire for functions and events. In this way, the hall serves the community and derives an income.
West Tilbury has a versatile soil and geology, which allows for a wide variety of food production around the year. This includes barley, potatoes, salad onions, spring greens, oilseed rapes, and even maize corn in the lighter soils. Many people also cultivate beans and herbs such as coriander in this area.
There are a number of notable people that hail from this area. They include Emily Mary Osborne, a Victoria-era painter, Ernest Achey Loftus, a diarist that opened the West Tilbury Village Hall, Gervase of Tilbury, who was the author of ‘Otia Imperialia’. Another notable person from this village is the notorious John Nevison, a rogue highwayman, and a robber.
