About West Thurrock
West Thurrock is a parish of the Church of England located on the northern bank of the River Thames. West Thurrock is an industrial town with a population of 7,795 people. The most prominent industries in West Thurrock include the Unilever chilled distribution centre and a Procter & Gamble manufacturing plant.
There is also an industrial chemical manufacturing plant that replaced a large coal-burning power station that closed in 1993. West Thurrock, like many of the other towns in the area, were mostly concerned with the production of cement. Production of cement is now being carried out by Lafarge below the Queen Elizabeth II bridge.
One of the biggest attractions of West Thurrock is the Lakeside Shopping Centre that is located on the site of a former chalk quarry. This shopping centre consists of almost 2,600,000 square feet of retail space. The site itself has a size of 200 acres. The centre was completed in 1990 and opened by Princess Alexandra.
West Thurrock is also famous for its parish church that was used in the film “Four Weddings and a Funeral”. Another notable building that stood in West Thurrock is Belmont Castle, a neo-gothic mansion that was built for Zachariah Button. The mansion was demolished in 1943 to develop a chalk quarry in the vicinity.
West Thurrock is conveniently located and within close proximity to Grays, South Ockendon, and Aveley. The nearest stations are Purfleet railway station, Chafford Hundred, and Grays railway station.
