Welling is a town with a population of 41,000 people in the London Borough of Bexley. It is around 10.5 miles to the east-southeast of Charing Cross in the centre of London. The origin of the town’s name is not entirely clear. It is generally accepted that it comes from “Welwyn”, which means “place of the spring”. This would make sense because of the existence of an underground spring in the town.
East Wickham is a settlement in Welling that is one of the oldest in the area. Discoveries of a Neolithic stone axe and the remains of Roman buildings in the area confirms the existence of early settlements in this vicinity.
Welling’s residential development was largely stimulated after World War I by the Bexley’s Urban District Council’s construction of 400 houses north of the railway. The Danson estate was subsequently sold to developers who subdivided the land.
Between 1990 and 1995, the British National Party had their headquarters in Welling. This gave rise to extensive anti-racist riots in 1993. The council shut down the headquarters in the area in 1995.
Welling is a lively and vibrant town with many schools and colleges and a rich culture. The most notable schools include the Bexley Grammar School, Harris Academy Falconwood, and Welling School.
There are many places for dining and socializing in Welling, for example, The Glenmore Arms public house and the Avenida restaurant. The ‘Old Kofi Pot’ is also a popular venue because of its authentic café culture.
