Southfleet is a village that is located in the Borough of Dartford in Kent. It is a tiny village with a population of 918 people and it is about 3 miles south-west from Gravesend. Southfleet gets its name from its location in relation to River Fleet, a bifurcation of the River Thames.
The village developed around the crossroads of Hook Green Road, Red Street, Warren Road, and Dale Road. The buildings here date back as far as the 14th century. The most notable of these buildings are the Ship Inn, and the parish church that are dedicated to St Nicholas. Pre-Roman Christian remains have also been found in the vicinity of Southfleet.
In medieval times, Southfleet fell within the Hundred of Axstane. In 1972, the parish was included in the Borough of Dartford of Kent by the Local Government Act of 1972.
Something interesting to note was that Southfleet had an operational railway station on the Gravesend West Line between 1886 and 1953. Today, Southfleet is connected to Central London and Dartford by the A2 Motorway. Southfleet is also close to Gravesend, Istead Rise, Darenth, and Swanscombe.
On the western side of the village is the Southfleet Cricket Club. Other amenities in Southfleet include Red Street Garage, Quest Engines 200, Broadditch Farm Shop, Withens, Beslee Farms, The Ship Inn, and the Village Hall. Southfleet is also around 12 minutes’ drive away from all the grocery shopping outlets and service providers located in Gravesend.
