About North Ockendon
North Ockendon is the most easterly village of Greater London and forms part of the London Borough of Havering. Historically, it was an ancient parish of the county of Essex. It is the only village that is located outside the M25 Orbital Motorway.
North Ockendon is 18.3 miles away from Charing Cross and the nearest railway stations are at Ockendon and Upminster. The area is serviced by London bus routes 347 and 370 to link North Ockendon directly with Upminster, Romford, and the Lakeside Shopping Centre.
An interesting fact about North Ockendon is that the tower of the parish church dedicated to St Mary Magdalene was used in the first accurate measurement of the speed of sound by William Derham, Rector of Upminster.
The tower was observed through a telescope from the tower of the church of St Laurence in Upminster. Guns were fired from the St Magdalene church and the time between the gunshot flashes and the sound were recorded. Since they knew the distance, they could use the time to calculate the speed of the sound waves.
Amenities in North Ockendon include The Old White Horse that serves home cooked meals, Ladyville Lodge and Care Home and Fenlands Nursery. The Top Meadow Golf Course is just to the east of the village.
Upminster and surrounding commercial areas are less than 10 minutes’ drive away. Here North Ockendon Residents will find shopping outlets, coffee shops, bakeries, and more. The village is also close to the Stubbers Adventure Centre.
