Meopham is a larger village and parish in the Borough of Gravesham that lies to the south of Gravesend. Meopham has a population of 6,722 people and covers an area of 6.5 square miles. At 7 miles long, it is also the longest village in England.
Meopham consist of four settlements, including Hook Green, Meopham Green, The Street or Dodmore, and Culverstone. The first three settlements in this list contain conservation areas. Hook Green is the northernmost settlement. It is a triangular village that borders Istead Rise. Listed buildings in Hook Green include the Weavers Cottage and the Railway Tavern.
The Street is the oldest settlement in this list. Parts of the medieval manorial mansion of Dodmore is located in The Street, but the original structure was damaged by an earthquake in 1382. The George Inn is another historical building located in this settlement.
Meopham Green is the largest surviving village green in the parish. There are two public houses in this settlement: The King’s Arms and The Cricketer’s Inn. To the north of the green, one will find the Meopham Vineyard.
Culverstone Green is the southern settlement of Meopham. Here are a supermarket and a petrol station. The Lacknut House is also located directly opposite Culverstone Green, which was used as a fruit farm.
In 1801, James Killick, a millwright constructed the Meopham Windmill. This mill was wind-powered until 1929. In 1965 it was fitted with an engine. Since then it has been fully restored and is currently in working order.
